Happy weekend! Today I’m keeping it short and sweet with this Citrus Berry Smoothie.
I’m going to let you in a little secret: I don’t usually like fruity smoothies. For me, I want my smoothie to be functional: to be low in sugar, and high in fat, fibre and protein. So I’ll always go for something with lots of leafy greens, a nut butter, half an avocado and probably some cacao powder to sweeten the deal.
But fruit smoothies?
They’re just not my thing.
Uh, so then why are you sharing this recipe, Tish?
Good question! Honestly?
I was a little hungover yesterday. I’m serious. My friend had some people over, and I was drinking lots of whiskey. A good night, but holy. Did I ever feel like garbage the next morning. I’ve noticed that my tolerance for alcohol is also lower since I did Dry January.
Another secret: I really like being sober. Like really like it. I don’t think I’m quite ready to take a full-time plunge anytime soon, but I get why people give up alcohol. I’m way more productive without it, I think clearer, I have more energy. I think I like the idea of having a dry month every quarter.
But, anyway. I woke up feeling hungover, and thirsty. And after a night of drinking, I always want orange juice. Always. And rice. (Usually I opt for sushi–don’t ask me why. But yesterday, I went for Kimchi Fried Rice, and it was perfection.)
So I decided to make a smoothie to help me get back on track, and this Citrus Berry Smoothie did the trick. As in, I drank the entire pitcher. And almost made another one.
This recipe is really simple, and again, not something I’d usually make. But I know a lot of you love the fruit smoothies. So this is right up your alley! If I were to make it during the week, I’d add some collagen and probably an avocado. (That’s just me.)
How To Make This Citrus Berry Smoothie
Throw everything in the blender and blend. Voila!
I think this is a perfect brunch smoothie. It’s really refreshing.
Key Ingredients
- frozen berries (I used a blend of raspberries, cherries, strawberries and blackberries)
- navel orange
- almond milk
That’s it!
Substitutions
If you, like me, don’t usually go for such fruit-based smoothies, I recommend adding half a cup of frozen cauliflower or fresh zucchini (I’m serious!) Personally, I like to add fibre to my smoothies, so I’d also sneak in 1 tbsp ground flax or chia.
You can also bump up the creaminess (and fibre) by adding half an avocado.
Allergic to nuts? No worries, this would taste great with coconut water (or fresh orange juice) in place of the almond milk.
