Green Antioxidant Smoothie Bowl

Green Antioxidant Smoothie Bowl | The Nourished Mind

Today is my birthday! Go ahead: tell me nice things about myself, I’ll wait. (Just kidding, I wait for nothing.)

In all seriousness, it feels good to say that I’m now 27. I feel no different than 26, but 27 just sounds like I’m more together. More grownup. More responsible. Of course, none of these things are true, it just sounds like it could be. When I think back on the last year, honestly, I liked 26. Sure, lots of life lessons thrown my way: big breakup, big move, dry skin (seriously, the quest for a good nighttime moisturizer is still on). But overall, it was a fun, very expanding year. I can’t wait to see what 27 brings!

This Green Antioxidant Smoothie Bowl felt much needed today: I woke up craving all things green and fresh. My breakfast for the last few weeks has mostly consisted of bacon, coffee and/or oatmeal. Not that I’m complaining–these are my favourite things to be eating. Nonetheless, something green and vibrant was a very welcome change.

For those of you looking for healthy options in the New Year, I think you’ll really love this!

I actually love smoothies–they’re a great way to pack in a butt load of nutrition in a single serving. And they’re hard to fuck up. Not impossible–believe me, I’ve blended many a thing that were never meant to be married together, and regretted it. Still, I love smoothies. But smoothie bowls and I have always had a love/hate relationship. I think that’s because for the most part, they tend to be really high in sugar. Typical smoothie bowls are usually just blended fruit, topped with more fruit and then some coconut. I have nothing against fruit, but without fibre and protein, you’re basically spiking your blood sugar and begging to be hungry an hour later.

That’s what I like about this Green Antioxidant Smoothie Bowl. It has avocado for added fibre, and collagen for a protein boost. This is what keeps you full, keeps you going all day long. It does have fruit in it, but less than a typical bowl, and it includes low-glycemic fruits like blueberries and cherries. For decorative purposes I stirred in the spirulina instead of blending it, but you could do either!

Spirulina also provides a little bit of protein, and it’s high in antioxidants! (But honestly, I added it for the pretty swirl.)

Back to my birthday. What do I hope for this year, at 27? I covered this in detail in my 2018 reflection, but in general, I want to keep learning about food styling and food photography. I’d like to continue paying off my student loans. I’d like to travel. And I’d like to keep an open mind.

If 26 taught me anything, it’s that you really never know what direction your life is going to take. That can be absolutely terrifying. But also insanely rewarding. I feel very grateful, and very eager. To keep learning, to keep growing.

26 taught me that I am far from perfect. But I’m pretty okay with that. I’m okay with being kind of scatter-brained about plans–I make up for it by being extremely punctual (as in at least 30 minutes early). I’m okay with being insecure–it means there are things I want to improve in myself, goals I want to accomplish. I’m learning to accept that as much as I love to be around other people, there’s a lot of value in introspection and alone time.  I’ve learned that as much as I love to be healthy and as much I love to set goals, I love to be a little wild, a little messy, a little bit of a hot mess.

27 is about embracing all parts that make me me. I hope this year, you’ll do the same!

Happy Sunday all! Let me know what your favourite green smoothie bowl toppings are in the comments below!

Dairy & hormones—friend or foe? There’s a lo Dairy & hormones—friend or foe?

There’s a lot of mixed info out there, but here’s the truth:

❌ Dairy doesn’t *always* mess with hormones.

✅ Some people are sensitive to it, while others digest it just fine.

✅ Full-fat dairy (like yogurt) has probiotics, calcium & vitamin D—which can actually help PMS!

The key? Listen to your body. If dairy triggers symptoms like bloating or cramps, you might want to try temporarily cutting it out to see how you feel.

But if you’ve been told you need to cut out dairy for your hormone health, just know there’s a lot of benefits to incorporating it into your diet! #hormonehealth #integrativenutrition #periodproblems

Endometriosis affects about 10% of women and people assigned female at birth worldwide, and is one of the most common causes of pelvic pain for women of reproductive age.

While we still need more research in this area, some foods might be helpful in lowering inflammation, getting rid of extra estrogen and avoiding the triggers that make endometriosis symptoms worse.

✨Did you know?✨

There’s a link between IBS and endometriosis: they often co-exist together. If you struggle with symptoms like bloating or stomach pain, it might be worth checking for food intolerances, celiac disease or IBS.
