Thanks for stopping by The Nourished Mind! Below is a list of the questions I get the most, so I’ll do my best to answer them. If you can’t find what you’re looking, feel free to email me directly at tisha@thenourishedmind.ca.
Q: Why did you start The Nourished Mind?
A: The Nourished Mind began partly as a creative outlet, and partly as a way to share the healthy recipes I was making. I had just finished going to school for holistic nutrition, and was bursting with ideas! The idea for the name came from my own personal struggle with disordered eating + anxiety. The more I learned about nutrition, the more I realized that eating healthy should not feel like deprivation–and that the link between a healthy gut + a healthy brain is strong. You can read more about my story here.
Q: What kind of services do you offer?
A: Glad you asked! The Nourished Mind offers sponsored content (which includes recipe development, food photography + more recently, videography). It’s important that all the brands I partner with align with The Nourished Mind values: healthy, sustainable + ethical products with a passion for making a difference. I also offer my services as a freelancer: nutrition writing, food photography, recipe development + coaching. You can read more about how to work with me here.
Q: Do you follow a particular diet?
A: Well, kind of. I’ve been gluten-free for the last decade (wowza!), and mostly dairy-free since May 2018. However, I’d like to say I follow a paleo-lite diet. I choose to eat a whole foods, plant-heavy diet, with clean proteins + healthy fats. I don’t tend to eat a lot of grains and legumes, but I will eat lentils, oats and chickpeas maybe once or twice a week. I find I do best on a slightly lower carb diet (around 120g/day) to keep my blood sugar balanced, and to keep me feeling full.
Of course, everyone is uniquely different, and I really don’t like to create food rules. For me this creates the most balanced way of eating and whenever I try to switch it up I intuitively come back to this structure. Oh, and I always (always) make room for chocolate.
Q: What is your nutrition background/ Are you a trained chef?
A: I’m a holistic nutritionist (meaning I went to school for holistic nutrition) and actually, yes, I was also professionally trained at a culinary school, with a focus on nutrition (although I would not call myself a chef, as that is a title reserved for those who have actually built their career working rigorous restaurant hours). I’m also a professional food stylist, and I worked at agency doing photo/video shoots for years before saying goodbye and joining a health-focused restaurant as their recipe developer + nutritionist.
I’m forever trying to learn and expand upon what I know about nutrition, and you’ll see that reflected on the blog: as I learn, so will you!
Q: How did you get into blogging?
I’ve been blogging since I was 13 (does anyone remember Piczo? How about Blogger?)–mostly in the form of online journaling. (And I’ve been journaling since I could write. Early entries mostly featured day dreams of the guinea pig my mother never let me have.) I’ve always loved writing, and initially went to university for English because I enjoyed it so much. But my love of nutrition took over and suddenly it was all I could think about!
So I started a blog back in 2015 to share my healthy recipes. It was ugly, with awful photos, and it was totally, utterly, mine. Over the years I’ve debated shutting down the blog and focusing on the career I was actually building. But I’d always get sucked back in, think of a story I wanted to tell, a new recipe I wanted to create, so here we are.
It’s been 5 years and I don’t see myself ready to pack up anytime soon.
Q: Can I repost your content?
If you’d like to share one of my recipes in a roundup, I’d be thrilled! Please make sure you link to The Nourished Mind and send an email notifying me at tisha@thenourishedmind.ca.
If you’d like to repost my articles, please email me directly at tisha@thenourishedmind.ca–all reposts require my permission, as well as two links back (one to the article, and one directly to The Nourished Mind homepage).
Q: Do you feature guest bloggers + recipes on your blog?
A: I do! If you’re an expert in nutrition, wellness, gut health, mindfulness or clean beauty, I’d love to hear from you! Likewise, I do occasionally feature recipe roundups, so if you have an idea and would like to be featured, feel free to reach out to me at tisha@thenourishedmind.ca
