Happy weekend! Ready to find out every healthy kitchen tool that’ll make a difference in how you cook at home? As September creeps up, I can’t help but think about all the moves I’ve made in September: for school, for work, for new beginnings. In fact, I’ve only ever really moved into new places in September (an annoyance to my parents who often help me move, as it’s the busiest moving season with all the students). But for me, it’s a time of rebirth, of new starts, of change. I love September for that. A time for new possibilities.
Even this year, although I’m not moving, my current roommate is leaving, and my close friend is moving in. So the excitement of making sure we have everything we need is definitely upon us. Everything from living room furniture, to bathroom storage, to cookware. And since it is such a popular time for students (or recent grads), and since it’s also a great time to make healthy changes, I thought I’d make a list of every healthy kitchen tool you might need in your kitchen to help with your healthy eating goals! Maybe you’ve been hoping to adopt more meal prepping habits. Or you’ve been trying to cook more healthy dinners at home. If so, I hope this list of kitchen tools inspires you to cook, eat + savour a healthier lifestyle!
If you want to see the list of every healthy kitchen tool you need, scroll down! If you want to read more about my personal life + struggles this week, keep reading. This week has felt a little surreal, in all honesty. Earlier in the week, someone broke into my apartment, and stole my computer. I’m not kidding. I came home to find the window open, and the front door ajar. What followed were some tears, some erratic crying into the phone with my friends, and then a more quiet acceptance.
I’m not going to lie: 2019 has been a year. Oddly, a very good year. But a very challenging year to be sure. And the last 12 months have brought with them all kinds of challenges: I ended a long term relationship and moved out. I found myself in a toxic relationship that I didn’t know how to handle. I struggled with some hard personal health issues. I struggle(d) with personal boundaries. I traveled to another country by myself. I was robbed. It’s been a scary year. Sometimes, it kind of felt like the universe was saying “Well you wanted your independence. Prove that you can do it.” Because it felt every time I turned around there was big challenge. Something new.

It hasn’t been all bad. In fact, it hasn’t even been mostly bad. The weirdness of it all, is that 2019 has actually been a really great year–and it’s not over! I have felt a lot of love this year. From friends, from people I’d just met, from family. I have felt a lot of compassion this year, from others given to me. From me to others. I didn’t know my heart could break and swell with love in the same breath–but it happened. I didn’t know I could be strong and vulnerable at the same time–but I’ve spent most of this year straddling that line. I have been the most open I have ever been (sometimes too much, sometimes I wish I would have been a little more reserved, a little more cautious). But for the most part, it’s looked a lot like loving in every way that I know how. That’s been incredibly rewarding in a lot of ways.
I have learned that I can handle it. Whatever it is. I’ll have a good, deep cry about it, definitely, and then move on. For a year with so much change and instability, I’ve felt remarkably strong and resilient. I’m learning, I’m growing, and yes, I’m making every fucking mistake along the way. At 27, I still carry a lot of naivety and empathy with me. I’m still an idealist. But I’m a little less shaken when things don’t go my way. And I don’t believe that bad things happen to punish you. I believe hard things happen because that’s life. And then you grow, you strengthen. But you don’t harden. You don’t become less vulnerable. I think when you do that, you miss the point.
If your year has felt anything like mine, I urge you to find strength without losing compassion. To create boundaries without cutting yourself off. To feel everything, even if it hurts, even if other people don’t understand why you do it, even if sometimes you doubt yourself. You can love someone and have the strength to realize you don’t want to be with them. You can feel scared about something, and still push forward and do it anyway.
Okay, okay: onto the list. Here is Every Healthy Kitchen Tool You’ll Ever Need for a healthy life! Enjoy!
EVERY HEALTHY KITCHEN TOOL YOU’LL EVER NEED
1. Skillet
If you’re just getting started in building your kitchen tool repertoire, this might be the only thing you need. Most of my meals are either thrown onto a baking sheet and placed in the oven, or made on the stove in a skillet. Look for a high-quality eco-friendly pan that is free from chemicals used to make it non-stick. Aside from being super pretty, this skillet below is also a healthy option!

2. Blender
No healthy kitchen is complete without a blender! Use it for smoothies, to puree soups, make pesto/healthy sauces. While a Vitamix is definitely a luxury, it’s not a requirement–most blenders can do the smoothie making job just as well!

Green Antioxidant Smoothie Bowls
3. Food Processor
Great for all your energy ball making needs, this is a staple!

Anti-Inflammatory Turmeric Ginger Bites
4. Sharp Chef’s knife
A good knife makes all the difference–and is actually safer than a dull knife. But don’t worry about spending hundreds of dollars on a knife (my favourite knife was only $20 from the grocery store). Instead, pick up a wet stone and a steel to keep your blade sharp and ready to go!
5. Paring knife
Great for trimming and hulling produce, scoring meat, and segmenting citrus fruit.
6. Cutting board
A variety is good: I prefer wood ones for cutting fruits and veggies, and plastic ones for meat (since they aren’t as porous and are easier to sanitize).
7. Wooden Spoons
8. Pots
How pretty is this set? You can spend as much or as little as you’d like on pots and pans– you can even buy them one at a time and build up. At the very least, I find it helpful to have a small saucepan, a medium saucepan, andย a stock pot.
9. Kettle
For a nightly spot of herbal tea, of course!
10. Glass storage containers
More durable than plastic (and without the leaching chemicals) glass storage containers are great for leftovers, baked goods and meal prep!
11. Meat thermometer
12. Offset Spatula
Probably my favourite kitchen tool. Use it for evenly spreading out batter in baking pans, dairy-free frosting onto cakes, and any other kitchen job that requires a little more finessing.
13. Baking Sheet
Throw your veggies on a baking sheet with a little salt and olive oil and dinner is well on its way! Also use to bake off your favourite paleo cookies.

14. Baking Dish
For dinner casseroles, summer crisps and stuffed veggie recipes! Aim to have both a 9×13 inch and 8×8 inch baking dish.
15. To-go Smoothie Cup
The perfect on the go healthy breakfast option!
16. Healthy Cookbooks
For inspiration and healthy recipes of course! Here are my favourite cookbooks that I always find myself reaching for!
